Guinea is home to a diverse population composed of various ethnic groups, including the Fulani, Malinke, and Soussou, who make up the majority of the population. These groups have distinct cultures, languages, and traditions that contribute to the rich tapestry of Guinean society. The country also has a significant Muslim population.

Language

French is the country's official language, but is used almost exclusively as a second language. Six indigenous languages have the status of national languages: Pular (or Fula), Maninka, Susu, Kissi, Kpelle and Toma. According to the census (see chart below), Pular is the most widely spoken (35% of the population), followed by Maninka (25%) and Susu (18%).

Religion

Approximately 85 percent of the population is Muslim, 8 percent are Christian, and 7 percent adhere to Indigenous religious or other beliefs. Much of the Muslim and Christian populations incorporate Indigenous rituals into their religious practices. Muslims constitute a majority in all four regions of the country.

Guinea, located on the Atlantic coast in western Africa, has a tropical climate with high humidity and relatively uniform temperatures. Sal y Luz Clinic Honduras Get Started

Volunteers are required to speak Spanish independently.

Mission Organization

Salt and Light Ministry Foundation (Ministerio Sal y Luz) is a nonprofit Christian organization located in the northern part of Honduras. The ministry is based on Matthew 5:13-16 where Jesus tells believers that they are the salt that provides flavor to the world and are the light in the midst of darkness that guides people to Himself. The ministry’s vision is to fulfill the Great Commission by proclaiming the Gospel, communicating the love of God in Honduras through His Word and deeds.

Profile

One of Salt and Light Ministry Foundation’s first projects was to build a modern, well-equipped medical/dental clinic in the Lake Yajoa region of Honduras. The clinic has several examination rooms, a minor procedure room, and 2 dental rooms. A state-of-the-art front office includes fully digital medical record capabilities and upgraded computer equipment. The building has a pharmacy area and several administrative offices for Sal y Luz. A chapel was built to provide an area for staff to start each day with prayer and for local pastors to pray with patients throughout the day. The Sal y Luz Medical Clinic is staffed by a full-time physician and a full-time dentist as well as nurses and support staff. Medical and dental care is provided on a sliding scale fee, allowing access to healthcare for all who need it. Both dental X-ray and obstetrical/general ultrasound are available. In addition to in-clinic care, the medical staff periodically visits homebound patients and oversees 4 soup kitchens to assure adequate nutrition for school children. These kitchens are supported by U.S. churches and provide lunches 5 days per week. Children are screened for anemia and growth retardation and are provided parasite prophylaxis.

Time Difference

Located in Central Time Zone, but Daylight Savings Time is not observed.

Location

Sal y Luz is located approximately 3km southeast of the town of Peña Blanca in the far southern part of the Cortes Department, along the shores of Lake Yojoa.

Climate

Very hot and humid.

Language

Spanish is the official language.

Religion

Although 95% of the population is considered Roman Catholic, it is extremely unlikely that most of these will have read or heard even the most basic precepts of the faith.

Travel

Volunteers will fly commercially into San Pedro Sula, Honduras. The driver from Sal y Luz will pick up volunteers at the airport for the 2-hour drive to the clinic. Road construction can potentially add an additional hour to the drive.

Housing

Volunteers of the same sex/families can stay in the ministry’s guesthouse which has two bedrooms, one bathroom, a kitchen, living room, and laundry room. Larger groups will be booked in rooms at a nearby hotel. Transportation is provided between the clinic and the hotel. Laundry services are provided at the hotel.

Food

For volunteers staying at the guesthouse, all meals will be provided. For those at the hotel, breakfast is available at the facility’s restaurant.

Community Medical Outreach

Providing free medical, dental, and vision care in Jesus’ Name

Sign Up to Volunteer This ministry of Samaritan's Purse works together with local churches to provide quality healthcare to underserved communities in the United States.

Our dental services include cleanings, fillings, and extractions, while our eye care tests for color vision, depth perception, astigmatism, and corrective lenses. Patients pick out their unique frames while their lenses are crafted on site. Upon completion, each pair of glasses is fitted to the patient. A full range of medical care is also offered complete with some prescriptions.

Upcoming Event Marshall, North Carolina June 21–22, 2025

Volunteers help make each Community Medical Outreach possible, with positions ranging from healthcare providers to just willing hands and feet. More than half of the roles necessary for each event are non-medical.

Volunteer FAQ //get height of element const stickySidebarHeight = document.querySelector('.sticky-sidebar .card').offsetHeight // set element height as css variable on document.documentElement.style.setProperty('--sticky-sidebar-height', `${stickySidebarHeight}px`); Our intent is to provide holistic care, addressing both the physical and spiritual needs of each patient.

Evelin Kembe traveled over four hours to visit a Community Medical Outreach where she was grateful to have her blood pressure and sugar levels monitored and also receive vision care. Her eyes had been bothering her, but without insurance, she had been unable to afford a checkup. She left the event with a new pair of glasses.

“I'm glad that I can see—it's less stress on my eyes. I can drive now. It feels like one less thing that's like stopping me from being able to do all the things that I want to do.”

While she awaited care, Kembe also had a conversation with a chaplain. “We started talking about God. He pulled out this New Testament Bible and was reading it with me.

“It's not easy to keep faith, it's not easy to keep hope, but I feel like God always sends people at the right time to make sure that you don't lose it.”
